1 PETER 4:7-11– LIVING WITH ANTICIPATION

HOLY LIVING IN A HOSTILE WORLD #15

One of the ministries that we here at First Baptist involve ourselves in is “Operation Christmas Child” sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse. Better known as Packing Shoe Boxes or Shoe Box Packing, millions of shoe boxes are packed every year in many countries for boys and girls around the world. Each box is full of Christmas Gifts for boys and girls in certain age groups. Each box contains items, for hygiene, clothes, school supplies, (pencils, pens, crayons, markers, note books, coloring books), reading material (often a Bible or New Testament) and toys. A correspondence course which teaches the Gospel is also included. Usually local churches hold events in which the boxes are given to local children in certain towns, villages and cities throughout the world.

Here at First Baptist we hold shoe box packing events and last year packed over 550 boxes.

Of course, to pack this many boxes, there needs to be the collecting of materials including boxes that are often wrapped, and all the things that go in the boxes. As you can imagine, this takes a lot of stuff!

How do our ladies and men achieve of this? Dottie Peters and other ladies live with anticipation of the shoebox packing parties. No sooner is one shoe box packing done for the year and the boxes delivered, than folks are planning for the next packing! All through the year shopping is done for shoe box items. When someone sees a good deal, they buy it for the shoeboxes! One who is always looking for donations of left-over toys, dolls, stuffed animals etc. that didn’t sell, and has come up with some great bargains and gifts. She also makes soap pouches, pencil pouches and other things. Sewing kits and fishing kits are made by another couple. Dottie has also made several items. So far, she has knitted over 100 hats for girls for the next shoebox packing. Other ladies also are contributing!

Living with anticipation is an important part of packing shoeboxes or any other worthwhile endeavor. Living with anticipation is also the way God wants us to live as Christians.

1 John 3:2-3

We return to our series on 1 Peter, “Holy Living in a Hostile World”, and after giving us some pointers on how we should live as new creatures who have been changed by Jesus in 1 Peter 4:1-6, Peter now shows us how to live with anticipation of our Lord’s return for us either on the family plan or individually.

BE AWARE! - 1 Peter 4:7a

But the end of all things is at hand;

End means consummation.

The Lord’s Coming is imminent. He could come for his church at any time! There is nothing that needs to be fulfilled for him to return.

The Lord’s Coming is imminent for each person, even you! He could come today for you!

Mark 13:33-37, 2 Corinthians 5:10, Revelation 20:15

Although Jesus’ coming could happen anytime, there are clues that it might be close.

Technology for “Mark of Beast” through micro-chips planted is available.

Hints towards “one world government”. Reducing the importance of nationalism, looking for one source to control covid19 world-wide.

BE ALERT! - 1 Peter 4:7b

…therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.

1 Peter 4:7 (ESV) …therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

Self-controlled – Thinking Clearly, my mind is under God’s control.

Sober-minded – Not drunk or under the influence to any unhealthy thought patterns.

This is for the sake of our prayers.

Prayers for Saints - Ephesians 6:18

Prayers for the Lost - 1 Timothy 2:1-6

BE ACTIVE! - 1 Peter 4:8

This verse reminds us of a very important truth: Agape love is not passive!

The idea is of a horse or a human being giving all he or she has, “stretched out”, using every muscle to the mas. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, 13

Love covers a multitude of sins – When we love each other this way, forgiveness, compassion, and cooperation will abound. We will want to forgive.

BE ACCEPTING! - 1 Peter 4:9

Hospitality, entertaining Christians who were traveling, was essential.

Jesus showed hospitality. Luke 9:11-13

We need to receive people in our homes! This reminds me that we must receive fellow believers in our hearts! Romans 15:5-7

BE ASSISTING - 1 Peter 4:10-11

Vs. 10 – God has gifted you. Romans 12:3-8

God has placed you in Christ’s body, the church, and given you a combination of gifts unique to you! 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Vs. 11 – Two types or categories of gifts into which each gift falls.

Speaking Gifts – Those who speak must speak the utterances of God. In other words, when a person teaches, exhorts, or preaches, he must preach the Word of God accurately, because he representing God.

Serving Gifts – Use the ability that God has given you to the max.

The goal in the use of any gift is that God would be glorified through our Lord Jesus Christ.

When Jesus is glorified, the Father is glorified.

LIVING WITH EXPECTATION:

BE AWARE!

BE ALERT!

BE ACTIVE!

BE ACCEPTING!

BE ASSISTING!
